Reading Circle Newsletter December 2011

Hi Everyone

I can’t believe that December is here already! The weather has been unseasonably warm – no complaints from me – but the bit of snow we have had puts me in the holiday spirit.

You haven’t received an update from the Reading Circle since you were invited to submit nominations for the 2012 Book List – Our Canada – Rocks and Roots. We received 72 nominations. Thanks ever so much. You can view the entire list at our website: www.muskokachautauqua.ca

On November 12, the Reading Circle Task Force met. They had the job of taking those 72 nominations and through the evening’s discussion arrive at 10 titles they thought best exemplified the theme. They chose 12!

Since then, the Planning Committee has been meeting. It’s the job of the Planning Committee to take the 12 books and decide on the final 5 for the 2012 Book List. The programme for our 2012 Signature Event - June 1-3, 2012 - will be built around those 5 books. We have been busy brainstorming program ideas, contacting authors, arranging entertainment, etc. When we have a definite program for the June 1-3 weekend, you will be contacted. Stay tuned!!

Here are a couple of points of interest:

  • Muskoka Chautauqua Gift Certificates are available for purchase. They would make a wonderful Christmas gift.  If you are interested call 705-765-1048.
  • Alex Mortimer and the Beast of Wildeor by Bryan Dearsley: Bryan has invited you to his reading and book signing at the Bracebridge Public Library, Saturday December 10, 2011 at 11:00am. This is a fund raiser for the library foundation. On the same date from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm, Bryan will be holding a book chat at Wolff’s Den Cafe, Muskoka Wharf, Gravenhurst. Come and join the chat and sample traditional German Christmas treats.
  • Jason Dickson, antiquarian and owner of Jason Dickson Antiquarian Books (formerly Muskoka Bookhouse), Bracebridge, can be reached at books@jdicksonbooks.com or 705-646-2215. His new website is http://jdicksonbooks.com

Have a wonderful Christmas.

Reading Circle Newsletter July 2011

In the last newsletter, I welcomed the new members to The Muskoka Chautauqua Reading Circle and reported that we had 86 members. NOW, I am once again welcoming new members and I am so pleased to report that our membership stands at 139!! Thanks to the new partnership between the Muskoka Lakes Museum and the Muskoka Lakes Festival, Chautauqua members will now enjoy a discount at the Muskoka Lakes Museum in Port Carling, to complement the many benefits members already enjoy at arts organizations and events across the area. Chautauqua members will also receive discounted prices for future Muskoka Lakes Music Festival events, including the Moshe Hammer & Ross Inglis concert on July 16, the Toronto All-Star Big Band Dance on July 30 and the Anne of Green Silent Movie on August 18. Also, remember you receive a 10% discount at Scott’s of Muskoka, a bookstore in Bracebridge, The Gravenhurst Bookstore and The Bookcase, a bookstore in Huntsville. Members just show your membership card or give your membership number when you order tickets to receive your discounts.

Our Signature Literary Event held June 3-5, 2011, was AMAZING! We planned for 200 and ran out of passports! To read some of the media coverage go to www.muskokachautauqua.ca and click on media. Videos of the weekend will be available on the website shortly.

The Reading Circle committee has already started to plan next year’'s event. We are planning to hold it on the first weekend in June 2012. If you missed the event this year, put next year’'s event on your calendar so you won'’t be disappointed.

On July 6, a group gathered to talk antique books at the launch of a summer-long lecture series held at the Muskoka Lakes Museum in Port Carling. The talk was given by Jason Dixon, antiquarian book expert and owner of Muskoka Bookhouse, in partnership with the Muskoka Lakes Music Festival. The evening was a feature of the Muskoka Literary Trail, a new initiative that links literary events and organizations throughout Muskoka.

Have a great summer

Reading Circle May 2011 Newsletter

Welcome to our new members and contacts. It is exciting to see the growth since we revived Muskoka Chautauqua in 2010. We now have 86 Reading Circle members and we continue to grow each day. The Muskoka Chautauqua name is no longer an unknown and people are coming from far and wide to attend programs that we offer. As well, I receive emails from people who know of literary events happening in the area. I put these notices in the newsletter and send them out to all of you for your interest. Of course for me, the biggest point of interest is the upcoming Muskoka Chautauqua Signature Event June 3-5. There is only a little over a week left for you to purchase your tickets for the sessions. I hope to see many old friends and acquaintances anmeet our new members on that weekend. Enjoy the newsletter.

Novel marathon inspires writers, creates readers.
The Muskoka Novel Marathon is a fundraiser for adult literacy initiatives in Muskoka. But more than that, it’s an opportunity for writers to come together in a supportive environment and spend 72 hours doing what feeds their souls. Now in its 11thyear, the marathon has raised more than $40,000 in total for the Muskoka Literacy Council and helped springboard several writers into professional careers. Winners of Best Novel in three categories: —adult, young adult and juvenile, —receive an opportunity to submit their manuscripts directly to Canadian publishers for feedback. This year the novel marathon is taking place July 15 - 18 in the Club 55 area of the Huntsville Town Hall, right on Main Street. The goal is to raise an unprecedented $10,000 through pledges and donations.

For information about participating or donating, see
www.muskokanovelmarathon.com or call co-convener Paula Boon at (705)788-3828.

Words’ Worth in the Spring: A Public Reading is a fundraiser I’m organizing for Bracebridge Public Library in conjunction with Friends of Bracebridge Library. The reading is set for Wednesday April 20 from 7 to 9 p.m. It will feature members of both writing groups that meet at the Bracebridge Library. The roster includes: Wendie Donabie-Dixon, Maria Duncalf-Barber, Paul Feist, Steven Jacklin, Bruce Liddle, Marie Rempel & me. Our readings will be as diverse as the authors’ writing styles: excerpts will include memoirs, short stories and poetry. Admission is by donation. Refreshments will be served.

We’d love to see a big crowd that evening. We’ll make you laugh, we’ll make you cry and hopefully our offerings will make you donate to a library that’s been the hub of literary activity for quite some time.

Thanks to all writers who volunteered to read at our fundraiser this month. I appreciate your enthusiasm!
